Classic Homemade White Bread Recipe

This simple white bread recipe is perfect for beginners and makes a soft, fluffy bread with a golden crunchy crust. Just simple pantry staples are needed.

This bread is perfect for sandwiches, toast with butter and jam, or even as a side with soups and stews.

White Bread Recipe:

Preferment: 

100 g flour / (3/4 cup) 

100 g water / (1/3 cup + 2 tbsp)  

Pinch of yeast  


For the dough: 

160 g water / (2/3 cup)

330 g flour / (2 cups+2/3 cup) 

7 g salt (1 1/4 tsp) 

1/2 tsp dry yeast  

All of the preferment

For the preferment:

Mix water, flour and pinch of yeast.

Leave the mixture at room temperature for 12 hours.


For the dough:

Mix water, flour, preferment, yeast and mix until combined.

Add in salt and knead the dough until smooth of use a stand mixer with a hook attachment.

Let the dough rise at room temperature.

On a floured counter shape the dough and put in a loaf pan or a round pan for second rise.

For better results bake it in a dutch oven cast iron pot.

Make sure to preheat the cast iron pot.

Carefully put the dough in and close the lid.

Open the lid after 10 or 15 minutes after baking.

Bake in a preheated 200°C / 392°F oven until the crust if golden brown.
